When Brian and Jennifer first conceived the idea of collaborating their talents to create a unique building company, they were aware of the importance of building a house and of the few choices builders offered to their clients structurally as well as aesthetically. Both having Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Arizona, they were very aware of the importance of the integration of good design and function. Both taught University level art and design for ten years before moving to Silver City in 1995. "At this time, we were trying to get established, raise our new baby, and figure out our future plans. Because we are artists and designers, we understand and are very aware of the importance of form and function and its relationship to the environment. This is rarely considered in the house building profession."

Brian continued his construction business he had for ten years before the move. He was always frustrated though, by being part of the growth problem. Seeing the way builders encouraged their clients to build huge houses without any regard to the site or use of materials, he decided to change his focus. Brian chose to focus on energy efficient, eco-sustainable building and bring it into the mainstream by offering a full design service that combines alternative materials with traditional and contemporary architecture.

At the same time, Brian decided to partner with Rae Douglass of Douglass Architecture based in San Francisco, CA. Brian had assisted Rae on previous projects and they decided to work together and offer a complete package that the average homebuilder can utilize. "This collaboration has been an idea we have had for a while. It is essential that good design is accessible to the average homebuilder." Rae designs the house, Jennifer assists with interior/exterior detail, and Brian makes it become real through his craft. "To make change, alternative building has got to be accessible to the mainstream public through education and great design. To have Rae Douglass on our team, who is known for his exceptional award winning design work, is really making our vision a success." It is important for Brian to find the best ways possible to integrate green building techniques with mainstream culture and what better place to do this than Silver City. Because of our knowledge of design and alternative building techniques, we have the ability to assist our clients in a way most builders cannot.

As an artist, designer, and especially as a builder, Brian brings his meticulous sense of detail to each project, creating highly crafted houses. With his background, and his team's background, he can envision and create the tone for each client. He doesn't take shortcuts, but understands the importance of honesty and integrity. Brian personally oversees and is involved in the construction of each house to make sure everything is done to his standards.
