Sun dried brick has been used as a construction material for over 10,000 years and is a natural building material made from sand, clay, water and a fibrous material. Adobe is a very durable building material with some of the oldest buildings in the world made from adobe bricks. It is also one of the most aesthetically beautiful home building materials. Most of the old buildings in the southwest desert country are made from Adobe.
In addition to Adobe being aesthetically beautiful, it can serve as a significant heat reservoir due to the thermal properties inherent in the massive walls typical in Adobe construction. In climates typified by hot days and cool nights, the high thermal mass of adobe averages out the high and low temperatures of the day, moderating the living space temperature. Thus a well planned adobe wall of the appropriate thickness is very effective in controlling inside temperature through the wide daily fluctuations typical of desert climates. Like Straw Bale, Adobe walls breathe which allows a healthy air exchange as well as a release of moisture. SunBear uses a local Adobe Block company that makes their blocks in Mule Creek, NM about 25 miles north of SIlver CIty. We use Mule Creek Adobe because they make a wonderful product and are commited to their craft by supporting and educating about earthen building materials. Aesthetically, the blocks are beautiful too.
